HAPPY NEW DECADE

Hello all,

Happy New Year!

It has been quite some time since my last blog, for a variety of reasons.  I’ve mentioned the ongoing problems we here in Australia are facing, but now you will be right across our bush fires.  We are featuring on the daytime and evening news for all the wrong reasons.

Some media coverage would have you believe all of Australia is on fire.  Hmmm.

That’s not entirely accurate, but a lot of it is burning and out of control.  We are a very big chunk of dirt, similar in size to the USA and this great southern land is a hot, dry, dusty and smoky one these days.

Here in SE Queensland, we are not in any danger of fires.  There are some fires burning out in the hills, but they are posing no risk to our region. It’s what’s happening further south in NSW, Victoria and South Australia that has everyone worried.  I won’t try to describe the destruction; you can pick any number of videos or images online to see for yourself.

Things are bad.  Very bad.  The fires are out of control, the firefighters are exhausted but determined to do everything they can to stop loss of life and or property.  I have family in the direct line of fire, so I am keeping watch on social media to track how they’re going.   It is a helpless situation.

The other concern is the hundreds of thousands of wildlife species that are dying in the fires.  Our Koala, Kangaroo and bird population is being decimated.

To give you an idea of the huge job the fire fighters face, with evacuating areas; an area the size of Belgium is burning like a monster, out of control.  It can’t be stopped or put out.  So, they are using every means possible to get the people out of there.  The Army are helping, and aircraft are being deployed as by sea is the only way.  The roads are too dangerous.

Up here in SE Queensland, we are having a very hot Summer.  Our area is tinder dry and one spark is all it would take to set us alight.  Our drought has now reached emergency water restrictions.  We are only allowed 80L per person, p/day.  That’s not much!

So, best I find something cheerful to talk about??

My memoir is shaping up well.  My short stories continue to grow with each story I write for our weekly column in the paper.  I have over 100 now!  One day, when I have time, I’ll get a collection together for publishing.

That’s all for now, we are all on water watch and fire watch down here, wishing you a much greener, happier 2020.

Till next time,

Happy reading!
